Back to Scholarships

About the CVN 77 Scholarship

To honor President George Bush’s commitment to public service, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation instituted the CVN 77 Scholarship. The scholarship aims to recognize and encourage President Bush’s commitment to public service, which he referred to as a noble calling. The scholarship program, established in 2014, awards two $2,500 scholarships to crew or family members of the USS George H.W. Bush aircraft carrier, CVN 77. Every year one undergraduate and one graduate student receive the award. While priority is given to candidates attending The George Bush School of Government and Public Service at Texas A&M University, all are welcome to apply.

Criteria

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants must be in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Candidates must also plan to attend an accredited college, university, or graduate school in the United States. Most importantly, they must demonstrate an exemplary record in school and community activities.

Applicants must submit a completed application form along with the following documents.

  • An official transcript
  • A letter of recommendation from a community service leader/supervisor

Eligibility

Only crew and air wing members aboard the aircraft carrier bearing the name of the 41st president of the United States and their families are eligible to apply. To clarify, the Bush Foundation defines a family member as a spouse or child of a crew or air wing member. Moreover, crew or air wing members must have served on CVN 77 within the last 24 months to be eligible.

Members of the governing body and employees of the George & Barbara Bush Foundation and family members of any such individuals are ineligible to apply.
