Naming Ceremony and Dedication of the James A. Baker, III Pavilion

On Thursday, September 25, the George & Barbara Bush Foundation proudly dedicated the James A. Baker, III Pavilion at the Bush Presidential Center — honoring President George H.W. Bush’s closest friend and most trusted statesman.

The ceremony opened with the presentation of colors by the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets Ross Volunteers along with a stirring rendition of the national anthem by the Texas A&M Singing Cadets, led by David Kipp. The Reverend Kathleene Card led a moving interfaith prayer.

Secretary Andrew H. Card, Jr., Governor Jeb Bush, and Foundation CEO Alice Gonzalez Yates unveiled the new Baker exhibit with a dramatic curtain drop.

Speakers included Governor Jeb Bush, Fred McClure — Chief Community Engagement Officer at Texas A&M and Bush Foundation board member — and Secretary James A. Baker, III himself. Governor Bush spoke eloquently, saying that “the greatest living American” was also his father’s best friend — James A. Baker, III. McClure highlighted how the Pavilion welcomes visitors to explore American history, from the iconic Marine One helicopter to the historic 4141 Locomotive, while honoring the legacies of both President Bush and Secretary Baker.

Reflecting on his lifelong friendship with President Bush, Secretary Baker said: “As we look back at his legacy, we can honestly say he was the best one-term president in U.S. history. And one of the very best presidents of all time. His adroit management of U.S. foreign policy at the end of the Cold War is among the pantheons of great diplomacy.”

The program closed with remarks from Alice Gonzalez Yates, who summed up the Bush-Baker partnership beautifully: “Friendship forged their strength. Trust guided their leadership. Together President Bush and Secretary Baker changed the world.”

Now standing beside the George Bush Presidential Library & Museum, the James A. Baker, III Pavilion serves as a lasting symbol of public service, leadership, and enduring friendship.
